South East Commission announces Neighborhood Enhancement Grants

The South East Chicago Commission is again offering grants that assist eligible organizations with neighborhood beautification projects in the Oakland, Kenwood, Hyde Park, Woodlawn, and Washington Park communities. Each grant will be awarded based upon the proposed project, with a maximum grant amount of $5,000 per organization.

Chicago Urban League invites community members to preview their AT&T Digital Literacy Workshop on Wednesday, February 25

The Chicago Urban League is hosting a community preview of their 5-day AT&T Digital Literacy Workshop on at 8:30 am on Wednesday, February 25. Their offices are located at 4510 S. Michigan Avenue.

Those planning to attend should arrive at 8:30 am for light refreshments. The program will begin promptly at 9:00 am.

The goal of the 5-day workshop series to help self-motivated adults gain basic computer operating knowledge. It will also provide greater access to technology and improve job readiness skills for program graduates. After this training, individuals will work with an employment and job retention specialist to ensure a successful transition to the work environment.

CPS' Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services hosts annual Parent Empowerment Expo and Resource Fair on Saturday, March 21

The Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services will hold its annual Parent Empowerment Expo and Resource Fair for families of students with diverse learning needs on Saturday, March 21, from 8am-2pm. The Expo will be held at George Westinghouse College Prep High School (3223 W. Franklin Boulevard).

Featured workshops include an Individualized Education Program (IEP) Question and Answer Clinic, and an informational resource fair with more than 50 community organizations and agencies. 

Free online course "Critical Issues in Urban Education" begins February 23

The director of the University of Chicago's Urban Education Institute, Sara Ray Stoelinga, is offering a free, online course entitled, "Critical Issues in Urban Education." The course begins Monday, February 23 and goes for 12 weeks; estimated amount of work required is 2-5 hours per week.

Rise and Shine Illinois School Breakfast Grants

Under the School Breakfast Program, federal reimbursements are available to all public schools for breakfasts served to low-income children, yet only 45% of Illinois students eligible to receive breakfast actually do. Participation is often low because breakfast is either served in isolation, before the start of the school day, or there is a stigma surrounding students needing free or reduced price meals. 

Rise and Shine Illinois works with schools to reduce these barriers to participation by implementing alternative breakfast models, such as Breakfast in the Classroom and Grab N Go. While the food for the School Breakfast Program is free, there are still costs associated with delivering that food to children. Schools need equipment and supplies like insulated bags, Grab N Go carts and trash cans to make this program work. Rise & Shine Illinois offers grants to cover these extra costs.

PURPOSE:

Grants will support schools with the purchase of approved equipment, materials and initiatives facilitating alternative breakfast delivery models (such as Breakfast in the Classroom, Grab n’ Go, or Second Chance Breakfast) in an effort to increase child participation in universal School Breakfast.

ELIGIBILITY: 

Applying schools must either be implementing or be prepared to implement an alternative breakfast delivery model. Successful models include collaboration of everyone in the school district; including the School Principal, Teachers, the Food Service Nutrition Director, and the Superintendent. All applications must have authorized approval by the School Principal and Food Service Nutrition Director.

APPLICATION DUE DATE:

We will accept applications on a rolling basis through a series of deadlines: The 2015 application deadlines are February 15, April 15, June 15, August 15 and October 15. Please contact schoolbreakfast@gcfd.org to begin the process.

"Know the Core": Parent workshop on February 11 at Pershing East Magnet School

Pershing East Magnet School's Parent Advisory Council offers a parent workshop, "Know the Core," on Wednesday, February 11 from 5:30-7:00pm. Topics to be covered include PARCC, NWEA, and the Common Core.

The workshop will be held in the auditorium, 3200 S. Calumet.
